Report text is one kind of genre which has a social function to describe the way things are, with reference to a range of natural, man-made and social phenomena in our environment. The following is an example of report text with its schematic structure.

General Classification

Rice is plant that produces an edible grain; the name is also used for the grain itself. Rice is the primary food for half of people in the world. in many regions it is eaten with every meal and provides  more calories than any other single food.

Description

According to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), rice supplies an average of 889 calories per day per person in China. In contrast, rice provides an average of only 82 calories per day per person in the United States. Rice is a nutritious food, providing about 90 percent of calories from carbohydrates and as much as 13 percent of calories from protein.

Generic/schematic structure :

1. General Classification : tells what the phenomenon under discussion is.
2. Description : tells what the phenomenon under discussion is like in terms of  : parts, qualities, habits or behaviord, if living, if non-natural.


Lexicogrammatical features:

1. Focus on generic participants
2. Use of relational processes to state what is and that which it is.
3. Use of simple present tense (unless extict).
4. No temporal sequence.
